Haworthia esterhuizenii M.Hayashi

esterhuizenii: in honour of Essie Esterhuizenii

H. esterhuizenii was discovered by Mary Parisi. Bayer placed this species under H."splendens", but it is different. Plants are smaller, scabrid leaf surface and the shape of the leaves are more like those of H. acuminata, but with the colourful surface of H. splendens. Also the flowering time is much earlier then that of H. splendens. It is flowering together with H. acuminata and H. retusa.

Distribution map

H. esterhuizenii
was collected by Dune and Parisi and after by many others - Venter or Marx. It grows E of Albertinia, not far away from new species H. vincentii. In nature it is not so common species, it takes time to find the plants. There is only one locality known.

First this taxon was published by Ingo Breuer as H. albertinensis n.n., but shortly after Dr. Hayashi has described it as H. esterhuizenii.

Propagation should by done by seed or leaf cuttings. In cultivation it grows without any major problems.

I had not heard of the term "scabrid leaf surface"...but I sure like the color of these bumpy babies!
