Haworthia starkiana V.Poelln.

starkiana: in honour of Prof. Peter Stark.

H. starkiana is growing on steep, hot north-facing slopes, forming large yellow clumps, which are conspicuous against the brown and grey of the rocky terrain. It occurs only in Schoemanspoort, N. Oudtshoorn and in the valley extending eastwards to the Raubenheimer and Melville dams.

Distribution Map

The plants shows exactly the same range of variability as H. scabra - the leaves may be short, incurved and twisted spirally to one side, or they may by longer, suberect and less twisted. The relationship of H. starkiana with H. scabra is very obvious from the similar type of inflorescences and from the remarkable similarity of the various growth forms. H. smitii seems to be and intermediate form between these two species.

H. starkiana, if well grown, is an attractive species. It can be propagated from offsets or seed.
