Haworthia devriesii

Haworthia devriesii, Swartrivier, N. Prince Albert

Haworthia devriesii I.Breuer
devrisii: in honour of Vincent de Vries
H. devriesii was a remarkable discovery made by Vincent de Vries. The plant looks like an intermediete form between H. globosiflora and H. decipiens, but from H. globosiflora it is well geographicaly separated. H. devriesii does not offsett. Flowers resemble a great deal the flowers of H. pehlemanniae and H. globosiflora, but with slightly longer petals and greyish colour and the tube is less globose than that of the former.

Distribution map

H. devriesii is an unique found known only from two localities near Prince Albert. At both of these are plants comparatively rare and it is very difficult to find plants in habitat. The leaf markings and the colour of the leaves mimic their surroundings. At the type locality the plants grow in a very sandy soil under bushes, but also in the open. When in the open, the plants are occasionally almost completely buried in the sand and only visibly when in flower. It grows together with many other succulents species like Lithops, Conophytum or Biljia cana, species which grows only at Prince Alfred area.
H. devriesii is still very rare and difficult to grow in cultivation. Propagation should be done by seed.
