T. pumila, Vinkrivier |
Tulista pumila (L.) G.D.Rowley
pumila: dwarf.
T. pumila is the largest of the Tulista genus, can grow up to 30 cm. It is usually dark-brownish green to olive green with large off-white, rough tubercles. It can be slowly proliferous.
T. pumila distribution are is from Worcester - Robertson Karoo in the south west up to Laingsburg in north. Nicest forms are the ones from North - from Vrede and Keurfontein. These are covered with dense prominent tubersles ('okhuwai' sensu Hayashi). Other nice form comes from Mowers with very atractive white tubercles. Another interesting form grows at Lemoenpoort - plants here are purple with much less tubercles ('sparsa' sensu Hayashi). T. pumila is quite common at Worcester - Robertson area and further East and North it becomes more rare. The most Eastern form is reported from S. Swellendam and the most northern locality is near Matjiesfontein. On several localities, where it co-occurs with Astroloba corrugata, natural hybrids can be found. They are called Alstrolista bicarinata.
There are many synonymums in the collections - for example maxima, margaritifera and papillosa. It was a big discussion about validity of the name pumila and maxima but now H. pumila won. It is an easy species, it grows without any major problems. If it get´s enough sun, than the white tubercles became more atractive. Propagation needs to be done by seed.
Synonym:
H. maxima, Aloe pumila var. margaritifera, Aloe pumila, Aloe margaritifera var. maxima, Aloe semimargaritifera var. maxima, H. margaritifera var. semimargaritifera, Aloe margaritifera, H. margaritifera, H. semiglabrata, H. papillosa, Aloe papillosa

Me encantan. Saludos.
