H. herbacea var. paynei is smaller variety of H. herbacea, it differs from type by the bi-coloured flowers which are pink above and white below. It is less proliferous.It grows in similar conditions like herbacea, shaded under the bushes or in rock crevices.

Distribution map

H. herbacea var. paynei is growing around McGregor. It is on the south-eastern limits of the distribution of the species. It grows often together with H. maxima, H. maraisii and Poellnitzinana rubriflora.

In cultivation it grows same as H. herbacea, propagation can by done by offsetts or by seeds.
