maraisii: for W.R.B. Marais
H. maraisii is a slowly proliferous species with very dark green leaves with small tubercles. Leave end area is shorter and more deltoid than in H. magnifica. In nature it can grow solitairy or in small clumps. The species was originally described from locality near Stormsvlei, where plants are large for the species.
H. maraisii is growing from Worcester in the west till Heidelberg in the east. It is a very common element and you can find it in most localities. It co-occurs with H. heidelbergensis, H. herbacea, H. reticulata, H. turgida, H. mutica and H. mirabilis. From Robertson are reported form similar to H. pubescens, near Bonnievale are growing forms with guttate (spotted) leaves, near Eilandia is form with erect leaves and from Rondeheuwel is comming form which seems to be a hybrid with H. mirabilis.
H. maraisii grows without any problems in cultivation, just may be keep more in shade. Propagation can be done by seeds or offsetts.
