H. variegata var. modesta is a proliferous, moderate variegated species with fewer leaves. Leaves are quite turgid with some evidence of translucence along the margins and at the leaf tips. It grows in small soil pockets in rock crevices, usually quite high.

Distribution map

H. variegata var. modesta is growing in the area around Potberg, three known localities are from Kathoek and from Potberg Mountain itself. It is closely associated with the coastal limestones. New records from W of Kathoek suggest connection to var. petrophilla which occurs closer to Bredasdorp.

It is a very easy species, which can be propagated by offsetts.
