Haworthia bayeri

Haworthia bayeri, Uniondale

Haworthia bayeri J.D.Venter & S.A.Hammer

bayeri
: for M.B.Bayer.

H. bayeri belongs to one of the very spectacular retuse-leaved species. Leaves can be rounded or with sharp tip, leave texture is usually smooth in age, but some clones remains scabrid. Colour is dark green and when exposed more brownish. In past it was included under H. emelyae. It is one of the first Spring flowering species.

Distribution map

H. bayeri occurs from Oudtshoorn in the west till Uniondale in the east. Breuer use name 'laeta' for plants from De Rust area, with explanation they are disconnect from Uniondale populations. In last years many populations were reported to support the continuity of the species between these towns - to me they are same.

In past the form from Rooinek Pass was included to bayeri, but after its rediscovering by Marx and Scott it was described as H. marxii. Hayashi use name 'hayashi' for plants to the South of Oudtshoorn, which are a bit more slower to grow and remains usually scabrid.  From farm Erfenis Gerhard Marx described H. truteriorum, which looks and behave like magnifica (flowering time, leave shape, size and texture), but it grows in bayeri area - see separed article. Gerhard also described 'jadea' from Paardeberg. It has unusual rounded light green leaves.

Recently I found interesting "most Western" form of bayeri at Saffraanrivier, where it grows very close to H. picta (and H. cooperi "rooibergensis'). It is not typical form, according to Gerhard Marx it belongs more to 'jadea' or truteriorum type. Gerhard was tempted to describe it as a new species/variety, but in the end we decided to let it go...

In cultivation H. bayeri grows without major problems and belongs to one of the most attractive plants.  It remains usually solitairy, and propagation should be done by seeds or leaf cuttings. Although it is known for a long time, it is still very requested.

I think the plants at the Rooinek Pass locality are marxii, not bayeri

Thanks for comment - yes, you are right. I haven´t updated this article for a while and in the mean time H. marxii from Rooinek Pass was described.
