Haworthia cymbiformis (Haw.) Duval

cymbiformis
: boat-shaped

This species has practically the same distribution range as H. cooperi but unlike that species is an opaque, truer green color. It forms dense mats with fairly superficial root system and grows on rocky slopes along rivers and streams.

Distribution Map

In past it was very often confused with H. planifolia, which is "synonym" of H. cymbiformis now. The distribution range extands from East London in the east to Port Elizabeth in the west and northwards to Adelaide and Committees on the Fish River. Near Committees are known hybrids with H. cummingii and in Howiesons Poort near Grahamstown are growing hybrids with H. angustifolia. Variation within individual populations is small, but no populations are quite the same.

H. cymbiformis occurs primarily in the summer rainfall area and is very easy to grow in cultivation. It proliferates rapidly and should be exposed to at least some direct sunlight to prevent bloating and excessive softening of the plants. Plants can have more remarkable color under stress and/or if more exposed to direct sunlight.

I love those huge cliffhanging clumps. Great photos!

I have had many cultivars of this species in the past, including the planifolia variety. I have found success depends on the plant getting enough light. It is a very quick growing Haworthia and will soon loose its shape in low light. I have receintly gotten a clone very similar to a specimen I had from Baaken's valley. I was rather surprised to find it was self-fertile. My experience with Haworthias is they will not produce seed unless crossed with another plant.

It's so cool to see photos of my little houseplant in the wild!
