maculata: spotted.
H. maculata is smaller, proliferous species with purplish-green spotted leaves, it has short spines on leave margins and keel. It has yellowish flower in throat, which is similar to H. herbacea and H. reticulata. It flowers in October / November. It possibly integrates with H. herbacea, which grows in same area, but it differs because of fewer and more turgid leaves. H. maculata grows in quartzitic stones and plants are very cryptic. On full sun they get nice redddish colour.
H. maculata grows mainly near Worcester at Brandvlei Dam area. There is an unusual population from Audenberg Peak, N. of Worcester. More eastwards towards Robertson occurs forms, which are similar to H. notabilis (described as var. intermedia). H. maculata grows in quartzitic stones and plants are very cryptic. On full sun they get nice redddish colour. In the general area are growing H. herbacea, H. maraisii, H. pubescens, H. livida, H. reticulata, H. arachnoidea and of course H. maxima.
Propagation of H. maculata can be done by seeds or offsets. It is an easy species and if it is nicely grown, it can be very decorative.
