groenewaldii: after Jannie Groenewald

H. groenewaldii is very attractive species, which was recently discovered by Jannie Groenewald on his parents farm. It is characteristic by roundish leaves, in many cases with white dusky dots and lines. Colour is bluish, almost like mutica, plants have fine but rough leave texture, which gives them a glistening effect in the sunshine. It is not offsetting plant and it grows under small shrubs and in grass, well shaded. The density of population is sometimes quite high with plants of all ages growing together. It has some features of  H. mutica, H. springbokvlakensis or H. magnifica var. atrofusca. It is a summer flowering species, with flower type similar to magnifica and maraisii. The flowering time of mutica, which Bruce Bayer says it is the same, is spring time. Closest population of true mutica is at Dankbaar, where plants are very attractive, but still normal mutica.

Distribution map

H. groenewaldii grows near Swellendam at Buffeljagsrivier area. It is known from two areas, where the second population discovered close to Bontebok Park is much more variable than the "typical" groenewaldii. At this new locality it grows together with H. maraisii, H. floribunda, H. minima and H. marginata. Some natural hybrids with maraisii were reported from there as well. It is surprising, how they remains hidden for so many years, although they grows in quite well explored area.

Cultivation is not dificult, H. groenewaldii just need more shady spot at your collection. Propagation should by done by seeds. For sure this belongs currently to one of the most seeking species. Recently it was propagated by tissue culture, so it will be more accessible to all growers in near future.

Hi Cok, well it depends (as M.B.Bayer always says) what is the species definition. If I look at all "accepted" species by him, it is different enough to be own species. Everybody else accepts it except him :)
Re offsetting - both mutica and groenewaldii are solitairy, time to time they offset - but really slowly.

Do you know the size these beautiful plants are when they are fully grown?
