Haworthia erii

Haworthia erii M.Hayashi

H. erii is smaller plant from cooperi group. It has rosette 3 to 5 cm in diameter with numerous semitranslucent leavse, covered with white soft hairs. It remains usually solitairy and prefers shady growing situations. This plant was discovered by Vincent de Vries on one of his numerous expeditions. It took me three attempts to find it. Fianlly in 2018 I was successful. Many thanks to Peter and Clayton Mare for letting us exploring their beautiful farm.

H. erii was described from only one (sofar) known locality on farm Doornkloof, very high up in Kammanssie Mts. This area is known for H. arachnoidea var. setata, which is very common on lower, flat areas. H. erii can be confused with var. setata, especially in dry season, but when it is in full grow, it shows its "cooperi" features. In cultivation it grows in bigger size and resembles cooperi 'crystallina/rooibergensis' complex.

H. erii used to be propagated few years ago by Succulent Tissue Culture Nurrsery in Holland, so only 1 clone was available. It doesn´t have any special requirments, similar to other cooperi plants. propagation should by done by seed or rarelly by offsets.

H. cooperi 'harryi' belongs to cooperi group. It has larger rosette about 10-12cm, with numerous, usually toothed leaves. It remains mainly solitairy, with slowly offsetting in time. M.Hayashi and I. Breuer described this new element as intermediate form of cooperi var. gordoniana and decipiens. From type gordoniana plants it differs mainly by size and shape of the rosette and leaves.

Distribution map

H. cooperi 'harryi' occurs at cooperi Western distribution area limits around Uniondale. From here to North towards Willowmore starts to grow typical decipiens (on flat areas) and var. cyanea (on hill slopes). To the West towards Oudtshoorn grows some intermediate forms of cooperi/mucronata/arachnoidea. Tot the South of Uniondale - at Uniondale Poort and further SE grows smaller, more typical forms of var. gordoniana (or 'ioandra' sensu Breuer & Hayashi). Bayer makes it 'more easy' calling everything from this general area simply gordoniana. For me there are several different elements comparing them to typical gordoniana plants from Zuurbron, TL.

H. cooperi 'harryi' doesn´t have any special requirments and growing is same as cooperi group. Propagation should be done by seed.

Haworthia blackbeardiana

H. blackbeardiana is larger plant with rosette up to 15 cm in diameter, numerous leaves, partly translucent, bluish green colour. Leave margin have usually spines. It is slowly proliferous plant. It belongs to larger complex of cooperi - decipiens - bolusii. It is one of the few elements in the Eastern Cape which grows more inlands (together with tessellata, marumiana etc.). If it gets enough light, it can be quite attractive plant to grow.

Distribution map

H. blackbeardiana has large distribution area. It starts in the West from Middleburg area up to Queenstown in the East. In the North it is reported from Aliwal North and grows South up to Cathcart - Whittlesea area. Bayer includes this element under H. bolusii, which grows more to SW of its distribution area around Graaff-Reinet. There is connection to cooperi in the South around Whittlesea, where glabrous forms are often found. More South you travel, they look more like normal cooperi. Breuer& Hayashi use name specksii for intermediate forms of blackbeardiana/cooperi. From Cradock to South in continuos probably with H. pringlei. There are several forms of blackbeardiana, which has been descibed (by Hayashi&Breur) like calaensis - plants from Eastern limit of its distribution (see separed article), they are generally smaller in nature, but in cultivation after some years they tends to look similar. Other species is specksii, which is intermediate form with cooperi from Whittlesea area. Plants are often without spines (see separed article). Other names like malvina (plants from Cathcart area), batteniae (larger plants from Cradock), interia (Naudesnek) or speciosa (Thomas River) I treat here as synonyms for blackbeardiana.

H. blackbeardiana is quite common in cultivation, usually without good locality data. It is nice to get a couple of them and observe their variability. Growing condition are similar as decipiens or cooperi group. They need more shadier conditions and be careful with over watering. Propagation should be done by seeds, only few clones are proliferous.
