monticola: mountain-dwelling.

H. monticola is smaller, dark green species with small spines on margins and keel. The typical variety is very similar in appearence to H. variegata with mottling of the leaf surface.

Distribution map

Around Uniondale these markings are less conspicuous and leaves are blackish. SE of Willowmore the leaves are almost spineless and the plant are very mottled. Distribution area is from E. Oudtshoorn to Willowmore.

H. monticola is often proliferous species and grows in cultivation without problems. Propagation can by done by offsets.
