Haworthia aristata, Kabouga, old gate |
Haworthia aristata Haw.
aristata: furnished with an awn.
H. aristata is smaller cooperi like species. It has slightly translucent leave tips. Colour is bluish-green with gentle toothed margins. This species was described long time a go by Haworth and since than there was a discussion about validity of the species. Each taxonomist has different view on this element and aplly it for a different group of plants. For me it is element in between cooperi / decipiens / gracilis.
Distribution map |
H. aristata is not much widespread in cultivation, which is a pity. Luckilly Sheilam nursery is distributing Bayer´s collections from Kabouga area. Propagation should be done by seed. It needs slightly less water and light.

Hi Jakub, more questions and some observations. I have aristata from several localities, mainly care of Sheilam. While quite variable in appearance, I can relate most of the populations together. The plants from Soutkloof are a bit different, and I agree with your labeling these aristata aff. But the plants from Stonefountain (MBB6852) seem really different. These plants are much larger than the rest by quite a bit, have hardly any teeth/hairs on the leaf edges, and really look different overall. What do you make of these Stonefountain plants? Have you seen them in the wild? best, kevin
Re Stonefontein - Hi Kevin, well, whole concept of name "aristata" is a bit unclear. It contains plants somehow between cooperi - decipiens - gracilis. Thats also why some of them are more variable than others. Stonefontein plants Bruce refers as aristata / pringlei. Ingo Breuer and M. Hayashi are using "new" name for it "lazulis". I haven´t seen them in wild, (although I tried few times to locate them). But there are more odd plants from aristata complex - for example Colchester plants.
